Since there isn't much to look forward to for the final pre-season game, I thought I would take a crack at what I think will be the Packers 53-man roster.
Guys listed in Bold, are the guys I think will be on the roster.
Offense 25
QB(3): Rodgers, Flynn, Brohm or Trade
HB(3): Grant, Jackson/Sutton/Lumpkin/Wynn
FB(2): Johnson, Kuhn/Hall
WR(5): Jennings, Driver, Jones, Nelson, Martin
TE(3): Lee, Finley, Havner/Humphrey
OLine(9): Clifton, Colledge, Spitz, Sitton, Barbre, Wells, Lang, Meridith, Giacomini/Moll
Defense 24
DLine(7): Jenkins, Pickett, Raji, Jolly, Montgomery, Wynn, Harrell
LB(8): Hawk, Kampman, Mathews, Bishop, Thompson, Barnett, Chillar/Jones/Poppinga
CB(4): Woodson, Harris, Williams, Underwood
S(2): Collins, Smith
I think 3 more DBs will be kept out of Lee/Bigby/Rouse/Bush
Specialists(4): Kapinos, Crosby, Goode(snapper), Blackmon
Keeping only 7 Dlineman seems like a small number, even with the move to a 3-4, but where else are you going to cut from? If the Packers go with less than 8 LBs, they are putting a really quality player on the street. They actually would be doing that anyway if they cut Poppinga or Chillar. Unless they think Jones can pass through waivers and make the practice squad, which I am unsure of.
The DBs will keep 8 at a minimum, but due to Lee being one of the players on the fringe, I expect the number to be 9 kept in the secondary.
It has been rumored that trades could be coming, and I think that is the case. Poppinga and Chillar are both too good to be just cut, especially since they are both healthy. Rouse or Bigby are also on the fringe to both make it in my mind, that or Lee will get cut.
The roster is at the point where Thompson will have to start cutting guys he drafted fairly high. Will he be able to admit he made mistakes with guys like Harrell, Brohm(still too early), Lee(still early)?
