College Football Week 1 Recap

I have been asked to give a weekly power poll from another website. You can check out my poll from week 1 results here, College Football Power Poll.

My picks did not fare well, by my count I was 4-6. I am a little mad at myself with the Rutgers pick. I even say in my pick that I do not care for Rutgers, when Monday rolled around, I actually bet on Cincinatti. But that will go down as a loss.

The other picks that I am upset with were the Minnesota, Illinois picks. When I do not know a ton about a team, I trust the Phil Steele College Football Preview. He does the most extensive research for any magazine I have seen, and I lean on his research to help me with my betting in the early going.

Some other quick week 1 thoughts:

Florida was up 90 at half, we have wait for some of their tougher games.

Alabama looked really good. They racked up almost 500 yards versus under 200 for Virginia Tech. I was very impressed with Bama.

Oklahoma State got a good home win versus Georgia. Georgia went away from a physical run game that gave them a 7-0 lead, I have no idea why they decided to go pass happy after that.

Oklahoma will be OK if Bradford is back for the Miami game in a few weeks. They have enough big games on their schedule to get back into the title game.

BYU will have a legit shot at getting to the title. They still have Florida State, TCU, and Utah on their schedule. That is a very impressive resume of a team's four best wins. Only SEC teams and USC will have a better four win resume than BYU.

Wisconsin looked much more athletic, but how did Northern Illinois get back into it? It was 28-6. Was it lack of focus? Taking the foot off the gas pedal? Either is a problem, and a problem the Bielema defenders never have an answer for.

It looks very bad for the Big 10 to have Illinois get blown out by Missouri. People look to Illinois as being one of the more athletic teams in the Big 10, they cannot get blown out by a rebuilding Missouri team.

Other Big 10 notes:
Iowa needed two blocked FGs to beat Northern Iowa.
Ohio State needed a 2 point conversion interception return to hold off Navy.
Minnesota beat Syracuse in overtime due to an interception.

It is safe to say the Big 10 the big 10 got off to a sluggish start, but they did hold off for wins. That is more than many of the ACC teams can say.
