NFL Predictions. With the season right around the corner, tomorrow, I need to get my predictions out. I started going through division by division, but ran short on time. The media loves a good story. The problem is, they usually do not get the one they want. The story they want is Favre leading the Vikings to the super bowl, with him being a pro bowler, and getting a title. IT IS NOT HAPPENING. The Vikings lack the coaching leadership to handle things when they go downhill. Favre is an improvement from what they had last year, but where is the sure-handed WR he can go to? Who is the “smart” WR in Minnesota that will break off his original route when he sees blitz, or a different coverage than the original look given?
Favre can still be very effective, and with that running game he should be. But to beat the elite teams in this league, you need more than a running game, run defense, and some play action. A tight game will come down to lining up and converting 3rd and 6, time and time again, then stopping 3rd and 6, again and again. To convert those you need WR/Tes that can get open, catch the ball, and be on the same page as the QB. The Viking WRs have incredible speed, but their hands and instincts are not proven.
With all of that being said regarding the Vikings, the Packers can become the story of the season. Everybody dismisses the pre-season when a team: A. Does too well. B. Does too poorly. I am sorry, if you are dominating the other teams starters three weeks in a row that has to say something about the readiness of your football team. The Packers have great depth across the entire team, with a young QB ready to use all of his weapons, they will be almost impossible to defend. The defense will have growing pains, but they will be aggressive growing pains. They will give up some big plays, but they will turn around the next play and get to the QB. Also, if the defense does give up some quick scores, that is not a bad thing. Part of the offense’s problem last year were the long drives given up by the D. These drives keep the offense on the sideline, and it is natural to get out of synch. This year, the offense will not wait long due to either a quick score, three and out, or a turnover. I have no problem with that. The Packers have 16 games to get everything rolling on defense, this offense is playoff ready as of now.
